Product Overview

The Mitech MT180 Multi-Mode Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is a high-performance, non-destructive testing (NDT) instrument designed for accurate measurement of material thickness and sound velocity. This device supports two operational modes—Pulse-Echo (P-E) and Echo-Echo (E-E)—allowing users to measure both bare materials and those with surface coatings without removing the coating. Its advanced ultrasonic technology makes it suitable for a variety of materials including metals, plastics, ceramics, composites, and glass.

Compact, durable, and user-friendly, the MT180 is widely applied in petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, shipbuilding, aviation, and aerospace industries for routine inspection, corrosion monitoring, and production quality control.

Key Features

  • Dual measurement modes: Pulse-Echo (P-E) and Echo-Echo (E-E) for standard and through-coating measurements

  • Wide material compatibility: Works with metals, plastics, ceramics, glass, and composites

  • Optional specialized transducers for coarse-grain or high-temperature applications

  • Multiple calibration functions: Probe-Zero, Velocity Calibration, and Two-Point Calibration

  • Fast measurement rate: Up to 7 readings per second in single-point mode and up to 16 readings per second in scan mode

  • Metric and imperial unit conversion for flexible data reporting

  • Energy-saving functions: Auto sleep and auto power-off extend battery life

  • USB data communication for PC connectivity and report processing

  • Battery status display for monitoring charge level

  • Optional RS232 mini-printer for portable printouts

Working Principle

The MT180 operates on the ultrasonic pulse-echo principle. A transducer sends a high-frequency ultrasonic pulse into the test material. The pulse reflects from the back wall or internal boundary and returns to the transducer. The time it takes to return is measured and converted into thickness using the equation:

H = v × t / 2
Where:

  • H = Thickness of the material

  • v = Velocity of sound in the material

  • t = Time for round-trip travel of the pulse

Applications

  • Corrosion and erosion inspection in pipelines, tanks, and pressure vessels

  • Measuring thickness without removing surface coatings or paint

  • Inspection of manufactured parts like metal sheets, castings, and machined components

  • Quality control in production environments

  • High-temperature measurement using specialized probes

  • Testing in hard-to-reach areas or enclosed structures
