The GenRad 1417 Capacitance Standard by IET Labs is a highly stable and accurate four-terminal standard designed for the calibration of high-value capacitance. It includes a precise 1 µF internal capacitor and two inductive voltage dividers, which scale the 1 µF value in decade steps up to 1 F. This innovative configuration offers superior accuracy compared to direct-use high-value capacitors.

Capacitance values are read directly for seven built-in settings. However, users can also connect external capacitors through dedicated terminals to generate custom capacitance values—either standalone or in parallel with the internal 1 µF standard—and scale them with the same precision using the internal dividers.

The 1417 also acts as a reference for dissipation factor (D), set nominally at 0.01 for 100 Hz, 120 Hz, and 1000 Hz. It can serve in two-terminal or four-terminal configurations, with the two-terminal mode being useful for higher capacitance values where slightly higher D values are acceptable. This flexibility makes it suitable for calibrating a wide range of instruments, including LCR meters and RLC bridges.

All internal parameters of the GenRad 1417 are measurable without disassembly, ensuring traceability and allowing external precision instruments to verify or improve its accuracy.
