Working Principle

The Vickers hardness test applies a static load to a diamond pyramid-shaped indenter that presses into the specimen’s surface. After a fixed duration, the load is removed, and the diagonal lengths of the indentation are measured. The Vickers hardness value (HV) is calculated using the formula:

HV ≈ 0.1891 × F / d²

Where:

  • d = Average of the two diagonals of the indentation (in millimeters)
